On Sunday, October 25, at 2am the clocks will go back one hour – meaning an extra hour in bed for most of us.
When the clock goes forward, or back, it can mess up our internal rhythm – especially if we are used to going to bed and getting up at the same time every day.
If you do struggle with knowing when the best time to go to bed is, you could use a sleep calculator.
Home interiors specialists Hillarys has created a Sleep Calculator which helps determine when users should go to sleep, depending on the time they need to wake up.
The sleep calculator uses a formula based on the body’s natural circadian rhythms to give users the perfect sleep cycle.
This will help users feel fresh and alert every morning.
Research has found that people sleep in 90 minute cycles, and that they should be getting around five to six of these per night.
For example, if you want to get up at 7.30am, the calculator will tell you that you’ll feel most refreshed in the morning if you go to bed at 10.16pm, 11.46pm, 1:.6am or 2.46am.
Lucy Askew, sleep expert at www.Hillarys.co.uk told Daily Star Online: “Sleep is so important for our mental health; not having enough can not only lead to health conditions such as diabetes and heart attacks, but it can also affect your general concentration and motivation throughout the day.
“Our tool allows users to find the perfect sleep cycle that will leave them waking up feeling alert and fresh the next morning.”
Lucy warns that even though you get an extra hour in bed with the clock change, it can leave us feeling groggy.
She explained: “With the clocks going back we are gaining an hour, which does mean we get an extra hour in bed but this can leave us feeling groggy – we made the calculator so people can better understand the best sleep cycle for them.”
