I grew up watching Candace Cameron Bure‘s every move on Full House, and it’s tough to believe that fiesty teenager is now 44 years old and has three grown kids of her own. A fan of the actress and her bubbly, girl-next-door persona, I was excited when our paths recently crossed as Bure announced her partnership with dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer and his cult-classic Lancer Skincare (the duo is actually teaming up tomorrow on QVC!). Here, the actress, author, wife and mother shares her beauty icons, ideals and favorite products she relies on to maintain her super youthful glow.
NewBeauty: How did growing up in the public eye impact your perceptions about beauty?
Candace Cameron Bure: While growing up in the public eye, I was more aware of my weight than anything else. In the ’80s and ’90s, keeping a slender figure felt more prevalent as a child than makeup, hair and skin. There wasn’t social media, YouTubers or bloggers, which naturally made me less aware of a constant focus on beauty in my teenage years. However, I was taught to take good care of my skin and hair while working with makeup artists and hairstylists on Full House.
NB: Did anything that you learned stick with you to this day?
CCB: Yes, definitely! I’ve been wearing makeup for work since I was 10 years old. Makeup artists taught me the importance of taking good care of my skin by washing my face every night, never going to bed with makeup on and using quality products.
NB: Who are your celebrity beauty icons?
CCB: Helen Mirren, Diane Keaton and Emma Thompson. I admire women who embrace a more natural process of aging and continue to look the same aesthetically throughout their life. Aging is an unavoidable part of life, and I believe we can all grow older gracefully! These women are beautiful and confident while rocking their imperfect lines and wrinkles. More of my beauty icons are Kerry Washington, Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Lopez.
NB: You don’t look a day over 30! Do you do any in-office treatments to maintain your youthful glow?
CCB: I have had a Harmony Dye-VL laser treatments for the dark sunspots, pigmentation and melasma on my face that I suffer from the most. I accumulated so much sun damage in my early 20s and 30s because I was not diligent about wearing sunscreen or taking good care of my skin. While they were somewhat effective, I have found that the topical Dr. Lancer M Peel, aka Melasma Peel, I’ve been using lately is more effective. It contains hydroquinone, retinoic acid, kojic acid and azelaic acid.
I don’t consider myself a regular Botox user; however I may get it once a year (or less) on my forehead only to lessen my “angry” lines. I’ve never had any other injectables or fillers in my face. I haven’t had any body treatments either, but I am curious about fat-melters for stubborn areas like my lower back love handles.
NB: Have you discovered any new beauty tips while staying at home?
CCB: I learned to style my hair better with a curling iron and a flat iron. It was something I never really mastered before but had the time to work on. I also tried a lot of new products like facial peels and items that contain a larger amount of retinol. Since I did not have to go to work and be on camera, I was able to discover what works best on my skin in case of any reactions.
NB: What do you consider your everyday beauty staples?
CCB: Lancer 3-Step Method Polish, Cleanse & Nourish; Shiseido Eyelash Curler; L’Oréal Voluminous Mascara; Lancer Sheer Fluid Sunscreen; and Lancer Dani Glowing Skin Protector, which I put on every day when I don’t want to wear makeup.
NB: What do you do for “me time”?
CCB: I love working out on the Kira Stokes Fit app. I would consider exercising to be a major “me time.” I make time for it because my body feels so much better and thanks me when I do! I schedule time aesthetically for nails and facials because I consider that to be a part of my job. I like to get a massage once a month, but that is more of a luxury than a necessity. I spend time reading the Bible, journaling and praying each day. I love sitting alone in my thoughts—distraction- and phone-free! I find television to be really relaxing too. It allows me to zone out and stop thinking about my never-ending to-do list.
NB: I can’t believe you have a 20-year-old son who just got engaged! Do you ever look in the mirror and think, where has the time gone?
CCB: Thank you! We are SO excited for Lev and Taylor’s engagement. Yes, time goes so fast. It is hard to imagine I have three adult children already. It feels like just yesterday they were running around in diapers and I was reading books to them and putting them in preschool and kindergarten. I am so proud of who they are.
NB: What new projects do you have coming up?
CCB: For all of the Hallmark movie and mystery lovers, another Aurora Teagarden mystery, Reunited and It Feels So Deadly, airs on October 18. I just wrapped filming a new and quite possibly my favorite Hallmark Channel Christmas movie, If I Only Had Christmas, airing in November. The theme is an homage to The Wizard of Oz, my all-time favorite movie. This month I launched my new collection with Dayspring called Love Over All. The product line includes T-shirts, home décor, devotionals, calendars, books, and so much more. This fall my full 2020 Christmas line will be available through Dayspring as well! Recently I joined the talented team at Woman’s Day magazine as Chief Spiritual Officer, writing a monthly column to encourage women in their faith. And, my third children’s book Candace’s Playful Puppy releases early 2021, so keep an eye out for that!
NB: Wow, you are one busy woman! Is there something you’d like to do in your life or career that you haven’t done yet?
CCB: There are too many things to count. Life is so full of endless possibilities and there are so many things I would love to do personally and professionally. I keep chipping away at all of them, and I am very proud of what I have accomplished thus far. I will keep striving to do much more, and I’ll probably do things I never even thought of!
