Outlander has made huge stars out of Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, who were relative unknowns before landing their respective roles as Jamie and Claire Fraser in the epic series. They have been in the Starz show since the very start and earlier this year, the pair were promoted to producers as well as being the leads. Heughan recently opened up about his friendship with Balfe and the qualities he admires in his colleague.
Speaking to Gold Derby, Heughan said: “I think Caitriona’s strength. She’s always led from the front.
“She’s intellectual, she’s extremely intelligent but very giving. She’s very caring as well.
“I think I’m just so lucky, she said we did click, I guess, from the start and to be able to trust each other have each other’s back has been the most important part of this.”
He went on to say: “There’s always a weird time where we go away from shooting Outlander, where we always leave. We’re always in contact, she’ll call me, and I’ll text her and we’ll meet up whatever.

“But that first day back at work, it’s almost like we’re slightly tip-toeing or shy of each other and then we fall back into our routine.
“We’re idiots. We laugh a lot. We talk rubbish and we’re very childish. But it’s great to have her. She drives, she pushes hard and she’s very thorough as well.
Heughan added: “She does a lot of work and I couldn’t be more thankful for such a great co-star.”
The actor said Jamie Fraser would be the one defining role of his career and for this he was grateful for the part.
Heughan was answering in response to comments Balfe had made about Heughan to the outlet.
Balfe previously spoke about how the pair had clicked straight the from the beginning when they first met.
She explained: “It’s been such an amazing thing. We clicked instantly for whatever reason. We’re very different people but we have a similiarity in how we apporach certain things in our lives.
“How we approached work is very different and very similar. But he gives himself up a hundred percent to Jamie and he commits just a hundred percent. I think in that regard we both love to work in that way.

The Irish actress revealed how both she and Heughan had wanted to be producers for a little while and when their contracts came up for renegotiation they were able to discuss this.
However, it took some time before they got the extra credit with the pair finding out shortly before they started shooting on season five.
She said: “I’ve been tapping on that door for a little while. I think Sam and I are in quite a unique position. We’ve been on the show and I’ve been on the set pretty much since day one, less in the past two seasons.
“You become so aware of everything going on. It became apparent to me there are certain places that I can be of benefit and I could really help out.
