Hair within the follicle typically goes through a growth cycle that lasts about two to six years. Even if a person shaves or cuts their hair, the same hair will grow back out of the follicle from the root of the hair contained within the follicle. At the end of this cycle, the hair enters what is known as the resting phase before finally falling out a few months later. Then, the follicle produces new hair, and the cycle begins again. Drinking dandelion tea is said to help increase this process and aid in hair growth.
Dandelion root is a rich source of vitamin A, C and E as well as B-complex vitamins.
Dandelion also contains choline, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, biotin, and calcium.
All of these ingredients play a significant role in making one’s hair healthy, stronger and to help stimulate hair growth.
The polysaccharides found in dandelions possess anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties which help play a role in lowering levels of inflammation.
Dandelions help to reduce the production of pro inflammatory cytokines, which are compounds usually involved in the body’s inflammation.
“There are many different causes of hair loss,” says Dr Deborah Scott, assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School.
“Some are associated with inflammation in the body.”
This is why dandelion root may help with hair loss due to its inflammation fighting capabilities.
Free radicals are compounds that form in your body as a result of things like stress, pollution and a poor diet.
Over time, the accumulation of free radicals can lead to cell damage and chronic disease.
Antioxidants can help neutralise these harmful compounds and have been shown to reduce the risk of conditions like heart disease and cancer.
Studies show that dandelion root is especially high in antioxidants, which may account for its many potent health benefits including its ability to promote hair growth.
Dandelion hair tea helps hair grow faster by stimulating scalp circulation.
This helps the body regenerate skin cells, strengthens hair, and soothes an oversensitive scalp.
To make dandelion for hair treatments, simply add:
One tablespoon (or one tea bag) dandelion root
Two tablespoons of flaxseeds
Two and a half cups of water
Five drops of lemon essential oil (or 1 tsp of lemon juice)
One tablespoon honey
Steep your dandelion root or dandelion root tea bag in eight ounces of water for five to ten minutes. Strain dandelion root from water if using scoops. Set dandelion tea to the side.
Boil flax seeds in two cups of water for four to five minutes.
Remove from heat and strain the flaxseeds from the water immediately.
Add honey to hot flaxseed water (consistency should be slippery) and allow the mixture to cool for ten minutes.
Combine flaxseed water, dandelion tea, & lemon to a 20-ounce bottle.
Shake well to get all of the ingredients happy and blended.
Wash & condition your hair.
Pour tea over your hair for your final rinse.
Let sit for five to ten minutes with a plastic bag or cap on your hair.
