Winds of Winter is the sixth instalment of A Song of Ice and Fire, the Game of Thrones series written by George RR Martin. Fans of the franchise originally fell in love with the books back in the ’90s. Since then, they have seen four new books follow, and Winds of Winter is due to continue the story in the years to come, however fans have not yet been given a release date, and they are growing ever-impatient.
While fans were hoping that the end of HBO’s Game of Thrones would bring about a swift return to the books for author Martin.
However that hasn’t been the case, as the sixth book continues to elude fans.
Last month saw the author giving an update on where he was at in the book, and indeed confirmed it was “on its way” – but couldn’t give any further information.
Now, fans have been looking through the archives of Martin’s interviews, and have now pointed out a daunting comment from 2010.
Reddit user griljedi recently posted a number of interviews with the author, including one from FantasyHotlist in 2010.
This interview saw the author discussing his wide-spanning plot, and how it has changed over the years.
On being questioned over his plot, he confessed: “I won’t say the plotlines have diverged, but the process of getting from here to there has taken more time and more pages than I initially estimated.
“Perhaps because I found the places and people I encountered along the way so interesting.”
Last month saw Martin drop a rare blog post on his website, detailing the work he has been doing on Winds of Winter.
In the blog post he wrote: “If nothing else, the enforced isolation has helped me write.
“I am spending long hours every day on THE WINDS OF WINTER, and making steady progress. I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week.”
Going on to talk about the book explicitly, Martin said: “It’s going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go.
