Kate Garraway has revealed how Elton John reached out to her after her husband Derek contracted coronavirus and was put into a coma.
The Good Morning Britain presenter returned to the show on Wednesday, where she candidly opened up on a difficult few months amid Derek’s 100-day hospital battle with the virus.
While Derek is now Covid-free, he remains critically ill after being put into a coma due to the damage the virus has done to his body.
Kate has now revealed that the legendary singer Elton John reached out to offer his help amid the difficult time, leaving her stunned.
She told GMB hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: “Elton John contacted me. It was so strange, he was like ‘Hi Kate, it’s Elton.’
“I was like ‘Elton… John?’ It’s so strange, we do have a mutual friend, which I didn’t know about.
“And because of all the work he does with the AIDS Foundation he was like, ‘What can I do to help? I know a bit about antiviral stuff. And I’m on board, I’m on board, I’ll try to help.’
“He’s incredible. And I was so desperate. At this point it was really hard to communicate with the hospital, so I was like, ‘yes, yes, please help!’
“I put the phone down and I was like, ‘I know this is extraordinary, but that was Elton John. And I think he’s going to help’.”
The 53 year old left the ITV show back in April when her husband Derek was admitted into intensive care to fight the coronavirus.
Since then, she’s updated fans almost every week, with the latest news being that the 52 year old has come out of his coma and into a state of minimal consciousness.
Now, the star has told her pals Piers Morgan, 55, and Susanna Reid, 49, that she’s returning to her role as presenter on the hit news show from Monday 13 July, onwards.
“It feels strange to be back,” Kate told her co-stars.
After explaining that she “mucked up” with her son Billy, 10, after failing to get him a leavers hoodie after he finished year six, the star said she realised she needs to “get back into things”.
Kate explained: “I just thought, ‘come on Garraway!’ You know, Derek would be incensed with me, ‘This is your priority, you’ve got to get on, you’ve got to back into things, you’ve got to cope, you’ve got to read your emails, you’ve got to get on and you’ve got to come back…’
I just feel like I have to get on and do the things that I’m supposed to be good at.”
Piers, who recently announced he’s taking a break from the show until September, then interjected as he attempted to ask: “So you are…? come on…” before Kate said: “I’m going to come back! I’m afraid! I’m going to come back on Monday if you’ll have me.”
“You two are going, I’m coming back. I’m not sure I’ve got quite the fight to be a Piers Morgan, but I’m going to be with Ben Shepherd so we’ll be back on Monday.”
